Heatstroke Prevention: As heatwaves become more frequent and intense in India, it's important to take steps to protect yourself from heatstroke, a potentially life-threatening condition.

Heatstroke occurs when your body is unable to regulate its temperature, leading to overheating and damage to your internal organs.

Symptoms of heatstroke include a high body temperature, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and even seizures.

Here are some tips to help you stay cool and avoid heatstroke during a heatwave:

1. Stay hydrated

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water and other fluids is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid heatstroke. When the weather is hot, your body loses fluids quickly, leading to dehydration.

Dehydration can cause a range of symptoms, including fatigue, headache, dizziness, and nausea. Make sure you drink enough water and other hydrating fluids like lemonade, coconut water, or fruit juices.

2. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothes

Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothes can help your body stay cool by allowing sweat to evaporate. This can help prevent heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Choose fabrics that are breathable, like cotton or linen, and avoid tight-fitting clothes that can restrict air circulation.

3. Stay indoors

It is advisable to refrain from being outdoors during the peak hours of heat, usually between 11 am to 4 pm. If you need to go out, wear a hat or carry an umbrella to shield yourself from the sun.

You can also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays.

4. Monitor your health

Be aware of the symptoms of heatstroke, such as a high body temperature, headache, nausea, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.

If you experience any of these symptoms, move to a cooler place, drink water, and rest. If the symptoms persist, seek medical attention immediately.

5. Take breaks

Take regular breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned areas to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. If you are working outdoors, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.

Resting in the shade or under a tree can help lower your body temperature.

6. Keep your home cool

Keep your home cool

Use fans, air coolers, or air conditioning to keep your home cool. Keep windows closed during the hottest part of the day and open them in the evening when it's cooler outside.

If you don't have air conditioning, you can also use damp towels or take cool showers to lower your body temperature.
