Modi Surname Case: Rahul Gandhi to Appeal Against His Conviction in Surat Court Today
Modi Surname Case: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was convicted in a defamation case related to the Modi surname, is set to challenge the decision in court.
Today i.e. on April 03, former Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi is expected to file a petition in the Surat Sessions Court to challenge the verdict, 11 days after the sentencing.
Sources have indicated that Chief Ministers from three states, namely Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, Bhupesh Baghel of Chhattisgarh, and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh, will accompany him to the court.
Additionally, several senior Congress leaders will also be present during the court proceedings.
Congress Leaders Displeased with Rahul Gandhi's Conviction
The Congress party's national president, Mallikarjun Kharge, and general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were among several party leaders who expressed their discontent with the court's verdict regarding Rahul Gandhi's membership withdrawal in the defamation case.
In response, the Congress party organized a Sankalp Satyagraha across the country March 26.
Additionally, Rahul Gandhi has received a notice to vacate his residence.
Modi Surname Case: Rahul Gandhi Loses Membership After Defamation Conviction
Let us tell you that, Rahul Gandhi was convicted in the defamation case by the Surat Court in Gujarat, resulting in the loss of his membership.
The court imposed a sentence of 2 years in jail and a fine of Rs 15,000 on Rahul. As a consequence of his conviction, the Lok Sabha Secretariat cancelled his membership of Parliament.
Rahul Gandhi was representing the constituency of Wayanad in the southern Indian state of Kerala as a Member of Parliament.
Congress is staging nationwide protests against the Modi government in response to this development.
Modi Surname Case: What Was The Matter?
On April 13, 2019, Rahul Gandhi made a statement at an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka, questioning why all thieves have the surname Modi, referring to Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This statement led to a criminal defamation case being filed against him by BJP MLA and former minister Purnesh Modi, who alleged that Rahul had defamed the entire Modi community.
