On Thursday, Home Minister Amit Shah has announced a policy of zero-tolerance against drug trafficking. He also described it as a major source of terrorist funding. He has made it clear that the government will not allow drugs from any country in the world to come to India nor will it go out from here. Amit Shah was addressing the conference of BIMSTEC countries (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation). India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, and Thailand are members of BIMSTEC.
Inaugurating the two-day conference, Amit Shah said that India along with BIMSTEC and other countries of the world is trying to end the drug problem completely. He said that India is committed to reining in the drug problem and is also ready to play a leading role in the world in this fight. Actually BIMSTEC countries are an important link between countries of South Asia and Southeast Asia which is also a major route of drug smuggling.
Expressing concern over the increasing number of drug users in the world, Amit Shah said that the drug does not just ruin the person consuming it, but devastates his family as well as society. According to him, the number of drug users has increased by 30 percent in the last 10 years. Referring to the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that there is no country in the world that is not facing the problem of terrorism, inland organized crime and drug smuggling. Obviously, everyone will have to fight together against it. Giving an example of the vulnerability of the problem, Amit Shah said that about 400 billion dollars of drug smuggling is done every year in the world.
