Delhi: Smuggler Arrested with Sandalwood by Delhi Police

According to Crime Branch, there are continuously smuggling of red sandalwood from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. These sandalwood reaches China via the southern states of Delhi and then from Delhi to Nepal.

A large consignment of very rare red sandalwood found in south India has been caught in the capital. Crime Branch of Delhi Police has recovered 571 kg of sandalwood from a warehouse in Asola village of South Delhi. Amit Verma, a resident of Darjeeling, has been arrested for smuggling. Sandalwood's international market is being priced at around 2 million. Police have come to know that this sandalwood was ready to be sent to China.

The arrested accused Amit had taken a warehouse for rent in Asola village in southern Delhi. There was a hidden treasure of smugglers hidden there. The goods were brought from Karnataka. The accused has been taken on remand by the police. According to Crime Branch, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh are continuously smuggling of red sandalwood. These sandalwood reaches China via the southern states of Delhi and then from Delhi to Nepal.

On May 3, when the crime branch of Delhi Police raided a warehouse in Asola area, 571 kg red sandalwood was recovered from there. Its price in the international market is about Rs 2 crores, while in India there are around 50 lakhs. Amit is originally from Darjeeling, but for some time was involved in smuggling of red sandalwood.

On September 29, the crime branch had got great success, when the team recovered 4,500 kg sandalwood from a truck. Then three smugglers were arrested, the same accused had been informed about the remaining links of sandalwood smuggling in the interrogation. Amit Verma was arrested on May 3 on the same input.

Amit is the relative of Neeraj Sehgal, a smuggler arrested earlier. The police were keeping an eye on him. As soon as the Delhi-based godown was discovered, the red sandalwood was recovered. There may be further arrests in this case. In the interrogation of Amit, the name of a man from Noida has been revealed, whose contacts are to Nepal.

It has come to know that he would bring Sandalwood consignment to Nepal. From there it is sent to China. In Nepal, there are 2 such big buyers of sandalwood. All the people of the gang have been identified and now the police are preparing to try to catch them.
