The Modi government at the Center is preparing to give big profits to the telecom companies of the country. It is reported that dues of about Rs 40,000 crore can be waived in the spectrum user fee arrears case. In media reports quoting sources, it is being said that the Department of Telecommunications has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in a case against Anil Ambani that the government is reviewing the process of recovery of spectrum user fee dues of telecom companies.
On the other hand, there is also news that the Supreme Court has given the government till November 17 to consider the withdrawal of legal cases related to disputes of about Rs 40,000 crore against telecom companies. A bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice AS Bopanna listed the matter for hearing on November 17.
Earlier, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the government has filed an affidavit. In which it has said that it is contemplating withdrawing the cases against the telecom companies. He sought three weeks' time to reply in this matter so that the government can take a decision on it.
The central government has filed an affidavit in an appeal against Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications (RCom), challenging the order of the Telecom Disputes Resolution Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). TDSAT had quashed the government's decision to charge for the additional spectrum allotted to RCom. TDSAT had also asked the DoT to return Rs 2,000 crore to the company.
The department has said that the telecom sector is going through a financial crisis due to various circumstances. Telecom service providers are running in losses. The government said that the Indian Banks' Association has informed it that adverse developments in the telecom sector may lead to problems like failure, disappearing competition, monopoly, unstable operations and may cause serious damage to the banking system.
