1988 Road Rage Case: Navjot Singh Sidhu to Walk Out of Patiala Jail Today

1988 Road Rage Case: After serving 10 months in jail for the 1988 road rage case, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is set to be released today i.e. April 01, as confirmed by his Twitter handle.

Sidhu had been sentenced to one year in prison by the Supreme Court last year.

In the 1988 road rage case, Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend were accused of assaulting a man who later died during treatment.

1988 Road Rage Case: Sidhu's good conduct earns him 45-day exemption

Navjot Singh Sidhu was originally scheduled to be released from jail on May 16, but due to his good conduct, he has been granted a 45-day exemption from the one-year sentence awarded by the apex court.

The Supreme Court sentenced Sidhu to one year's imprisonment on May 19, 2022, and he surrendered in the Patiala court on May 20. Notably, Sidhu did not take any parole or leave during his one year in jail.

On the evening of December 27th, 1988, Sidhu, a cricketer who had started his international career just a year prior, and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu visited Shera Wala Gate market in Patiala, which was located about 1.5 kilometres away from Sidhu's residence.

During their visit, Sidhu got into an argument with 65-year-old Gurnam Singh over a car parking issue, which eventually turned into a physical altercation.

During the scuffle, Sidhu punched Gurnam Singh, causing him to fall to the ground. Gurnam Singh was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately passed away. However, a report later revealed that the man had died of a heart attack,

As a result of this incident, a case of culpable homicide was filed against Sidhu and his friend Rupinder at Kotwali police station on the same day.
