ODI Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan has been eliminated from the ODI Asia Cup 2023 after they lost their final Super Four encounter against Sri Lanka yesterday.

The Lankan Tigers won that must-win match in a thrilling manner and they will join the men in blue side in the finals of this fifty-overs tournament.

India has entered their 10th final of the Asia Cup while Sri Lanka has made it to the finals of this tournament 11 times, which is the most by any Asian team in the history of the Asia Cup.

The ODI Asia Cup 2023 final will be played on Sunday, 17th September 2023 at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

But before that India will face Bangladesh today at the same venue where the finals will be played on Sunday. This match between India and Bangladesh will be the last match of the Super Four round of the ODI Asia Cup 2023.

Bangladesh is out of the tournament and India was the first team to reach the finals.

Team India Had Hosted Just One Asia Cup Edition Till Now

As the host country of the Asia Cup, Team India has not hosted this tournament quite a lot as other countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates have done it till now.

In 16 years of the Asia Cup tournament, Team India has got the hosting rights just once till now. The last time Team India was the host of the Asia Cup event, was in 1991 and since then the men in blue side have not hosted a single event of this Asian competition.

As mentioned above, this Asian tournament has been hosted in other countries of Asia for the majority of the time. But India had won that edition of the Asia Cup when they were host in the 1991 season.

1. Navjot Singh Sidhu

The former batter from the men in the blue side was the highest run-getter for the country when India won as the host nation of the Asia Cup tournament.

Sidhu Paaji was also the second-highest scorer overall in the edition of 1991. In 3 one day international matches, Navjot scored 144 runs to his name. 

He was the only batter to smash a century in that edition. His average was 72, which was the fifth best. Sidhu also had a third-best batting strike rate of 81.36.

Singh had also hit 13 fours and 3 sixes which was the most in that edition. Navjot’s 104-run knock was even the highest individual score in the 1991 season of the Asia Cup.

2. Kapil Dev

India’s best-ever all-rounder and the first ODI World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev was the highest wicket-taker in the 1991 edition of the Asia Cup which India won as the host nation of this tournament. Dev was the highest wicket-taker in that whole season. 

He picked up nine wickets to his name from just 3 one day international games. Kapil also had the best bowling average of 10.67 in that whole edition.

His match figures of 4 for 31 runs was the best. Dev’s bowling strike of 17.56 had also topped the charts and his economy rate of 3.65 was the fifth best in the 1991 edition. 

India’s Matches in 1991 Edition of Asia Cup

India had played three matches in the 1991 edition of the Asia Cup. The men in blue side was led by Mohammad Azharuddin in that edition.

  • India Vs Bangladesh 1st Match was played in Chandigarh. India won that game by six wickets and 79 balls to spare. 

  • India Vs Sri Lanka 2nd Match was played at Baramati Stadium in Cuttack. India lost that match by 36 runs. 

  • Sri Lanka Vs India The Final of Asia Cup 1991 season. That match was played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The men in blue side won the final of this tournament as the host nation. The home side won by 7 wickets and 17 balls to spare.
