Delhi Mayor Election: The AAP's Shelly Oberoi was elected mayor of Delhi for the second time after the BJP's mayoral nominee Shikha Rai withdrew her nomination.

The BJP's deputy mayor candidate, Soni Pandey, also withdrew her nomination minutes before the election, allowing AAP's Aale Mohammad Iqbal to serve a second term as deputy mayor.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) held elections today for the seats of mayor and deputy mayor.

The results of the elections will have an impact on the operation of the Standing Committee, which is critical in local civic governance.

Oberoi was elected mayor of Delhi for the first time on February 22 after the previous polls were halted due to a squabble over voting rights for nominated members.

She polled 150 votes to defeat BJP's Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes.

"Congratulations Shelly and Aley on again becoming mayor and deputy mayor, this time unopposed," CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted. Best wishes to both of you.

When Oberoi was elected mayor, a few members of the house raised 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Kejriwal Zindabad' shouts.

Delhi gets a new Mayor after the end of financial year

The Mayor of the nation's capital is elected for a five-year term on a rotational basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the two additional years again for the open category.

The mayor and deputy mayor are to be elected at the first session of the House following the civic polls, according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act of 1957.

However, due to disputes between the BJP and the AAP party, repeated attempts to elect the city's mayor failed.
