The Australian team has suffered a major setback before the series against South Africa. The team's star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the series due to injury. Australia has to tour South Africa this month. A series of three T20 and three ODIs will be played on this tour. The team selector informed about Maxwell's injury and said that he will have to undergo surgery due to which he will not be able to play in this series.

Australia's National Selector Trevor Hawns said, "We are very disappointed with Glenn being left out of the team. After a short break, we were ready to welcome him to the T20 and ODI team. It is very unfortunate that he suffered an injury. His injury was greatly aggravated during the Big Bash tournament. He will have to undergo surgery to immediately recover from that situation."

Maxwell said that he himself is disappointed at the withdrawal of his name from the tour of South Africa due to such injury. He said, "I was not sure that I would be able to do well at the international level. In view of my recent condition, it has been decided to undergo surgery so that it can be completely corrected." Australia's team is scheduled to play South Africa for the first T20 match on 21 February. The ODI series will begin on February 29.
