Army And Assam Rifles Personnel Deployed in Manipur After Violence
Violence in Manipur: In response to the violent events, the Manipur government enforced Section 144 CrPC and implemented curfew in multiple districts, while also suspending mobile internet services throughout the state for the next five days.
On Wednesday i.e May 03, violence broke out during a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the Torbung sector of Churachandpur district, which was organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM).
During the rally, clashes between tribals and non-tribals erupted. To manage the scene, police resorted to using tear gas rounds.
Curfew was enforced as a precautionary measure in non-tribal-dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam, and Bishnupur districts, as well as tribal-dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts.
The army has now been deployed in consideration of the security arrangements in the area.
Violence in Manipur: Mary Kom Tweeted about the situation
The Indian Army has provided information on this. According to the army, the civil authority in Manipur had requested security.
On the evening of May 3rd, the Army/Assam Rifles deployed a sufficient number of units in all affected areas.
People are being relocated to safer regions to restore law and order. Indian boxing superstar Mary Kom tweeted, "My state Manipur is burning, kindly help," asking for prompt action from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the subject.
The army was requisitioned on May 3 night and was to remain in force until May 4 unless fresh orders for the extension are issued.
On Wednesday night, a joint team of the Army and state police intervened and brought the situation under control. With more police on the scene, the fighting had subsided by dawn.
Rescue Operations are taking place to evacuate civilians
To put the situation under control, army personnel performed flag marches in the region.
Throughout the night, personnel from the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles conducted major rescue operations to evacuate over 7,500 civilians from all communities to restore law and order in the state.
