Ambedkar Jayanti 2023: Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated on April 14 in the country. Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was born in the year 1891.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar is also called Babasaheb Ambedkar. He was born on April 14, 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Ambedkar displayed exceptional academic abilities from a young age, and pursued higher education at the University of London and Columbia University.

His study in law, economics, and political science earned him a reputation as a scholar. He was against discrimination against Dalits on the basis of caste and in his early career, he was an editor, economist, professor and social activist.

Ambedkar graduated from Elphinstone High School in 1908 with his 10th class and in 1912 graduated from Bombay University with a degree in Political Studies and Economics.

Ambedkar was a brilliant student and he passed all his exams without any problem.

The Gaekwad rulers of Sahayaji Rao III were so impressed with him that they gave him a stipend of Rs. 25 per month.

Ambedkar used all that money which was given as stipened to continue his studies outside India. He applied for a master's degree in economics at Columbia University in New York.

He was elected to Columbia University and completed his master's degree in 1915 and that was when Babasaheb submitted his thesis entitled 'Ancient Indian Commerce'.

In the year 1916, he began work on his new thesis, The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution. He also submitted his application to the London School of Economics and successfully secured a place.

Governor Lord Sydenham also assisted him in the work of thesis. He became a professor of political science at the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics but decided to continue his studies and moved to England.

He received his PhD in economics in 1927 and was awarded a doctorate by Columbia University the same year.

Ambedkar played an important role in the formation of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 1935. Back in 1955, he was the first to propose division of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar for better government.

He also wanted to make Sanskrit the official language of the Union of India and he twice contested the Lok Sabha elections but failed to win on both occasions.

His autobiography, "Waiting for a Visa", is used as a syllabus at Columbia University.

Dr. Ambedkar holds the distinction of being the first Indian to obtain a PhD from a foreign university. It was only BR Ambedkar who insisted on reducing India's working hours from 14 hours to eight hours.

He was a staunch opponent of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
