The Issue of ‘Election’ during Ramzan Reached the Supreme Court

Ranveer Tanwar

The Supreme Court, hearing the petition, asked the EC to consider whether voting can be conducted at 5 am in the morning instead of 7 in the morning during Ramzan? The court said that the EC should listen to the petitioner and consider whether the voting time can be changed in the coming phases? However, the court has not issued any order on its behalf. You know, this time Lok Sabha elections are happening in 7 phases. The first four phases have been done and the fifth phase of polling is on May 6. Ramzan is starting on May 5.

Earlier, some religious leaders and politicians have expressed anguish over the long schedule of the Lok Sabha elections and the voting in the month of Ramzan. Due to the voting in Ramzan, the holy festival of Muslims, these people expressed their fears of less voting. On this, the Election Commission had said that Ramzan cannot be separated from this in such a way that elections will be in full months. However, keeping in view the main festivals that will be held during Ramzan and on the day of Friday, voting has not been kept in these days.
