The US Parliament on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of General Charles Q. Brown Jr. as Air Force Chief, making him the first black officer to lead one of the country's military service. Vice President Mike Pence voted in Parliament to appoint him the next Air Force chief. 96 MPs voted in favor, while not a single MP came out in protest. Demand for giving equal rights to blacks is being raised after the death of a black citizen George Floyd.
General Brown had released a video on Twitter when his name was decided for the Chief of the Air Force. In it, he said, "I am emotional. I am thinking of many African-American who faced a situation like George Floyd. I am thinking about history and my experiences related to racist issues. I see some hope when I am nominated as the Chief of the Air Force. However, it will also be a major burden. I will try to end racial discrimination with my professional attitude."
The number of black officers at big positions in the US Army is small. According to recent Pentagon figures, 18.7% of the military's workforce is black. White officers make up 71.6 percent of the posts while black officers are only 8.8%. Efforts to eliminate this discrimination have started in the army as well, in protest against the blacks in the country. The heads of all military services have spoken of finding solutions to the issue in their units after Floyd's death.
