Strain Spreading in India is declared as Variant of Concern by WHO

Nidhi Hakla

The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the strain spreading in India in the second wave of Corona as a globally worrisome (variant of Concern). It says that variant B.1.617, first found in India in October, looks more contagious and can spread easily.

According to Maria van Kerkhove, head of the WHO on Corona, a small sample size lab study has revealed that antibodies are having less effect on this variant (B.1.617). But this does not mean that this variant has more immunity to the vaccine.

Kerkhove said in a statement released on Monday that current data suggests that all corona vaccines are effective in preventing disease and saving the lives of people infected with the B.1.617 variant. Also said that more information about this variant will be given on Tuesday.

Vaccine, Screening work, and Treatment does not change

WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan has also said that the vaccine and investigation against the current variant are effective. Also said that treatment is also being given earlier. Therefore, people do not need to change it, instead, they should come forward and get vaccinated.

India is the fourth country after Britain, Brazil, and South Africa where the spreading corona variant is included in the Concern category by the WHO. Kerkhove says that in the coming time, there will be a variant of Concern worldwide. Therefore, we should try as much as possible to prevent infection.

WHO also Questioned the Figures

WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan said on Monday that the rate of infection and deaths in India is worrisome. Speaking to news agency ANI, Swaminathan said that the Institute for Matrix and Evolution (IHME) has said about 10 lakh deaths by August based on current models and data, it is not a future estimate. It can also change.

Swaminathan said that at present, the situation in Corona and other countries of the South-East is worrying about the daily cases and deaths. Data are also underestimated here. In fact, all countries of the world have reported lower figures of corona infections and deaths. Efforts should be made to give actual figures to governments.
