A police case has been lodged against former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath for his remarks over B.1.617 Covid variant. He had termed B.1.617 strain – first found in India – as the "Indian variant". Meanwhile, he has been accused of spreading misleading information under the Disaster Management Act and section 188.
On the complaint of BJP MLAs, Crime Branch Bhopal has registered a case against Kamal Nath under cybercrime on Sunday night. At the same time, Vishvas Sarang, the minister of Shivraj Singh's government, has described Kamal Nath's statement as treason.
Meanwhile, the FIR reads, "Kamal Nath said corona started with Chinese variant but now it is [the] Indian variant of Covid-19 which is responsible for the second wave and many countries have suspended flights due to the Indian variant. Nath also said Indians who are working and studying in foreign countries are facing trouble due to it. But in real, foreign countries are trying to help India by sending important things to fight against the epidemic. Nath tried to misguide people and to create disturbance in the country."
On the other hand, many BJP central leaders had criticized Nath's statement. Union minister Prakash Javadekar had said that even the WHO has clarified that any variant not named after any country. Meanwhile, he said, "Mr Nath did not stop there and said 'hamari pahchan mera Bharat Covid'… This is an insult to India. Many Congress leaders are making such statements. Many leaders said this is an Indian variant."
