Jobless Rate Increased In India, Unemployment Rate Increased From 7.45% To 7.80% In March

Shivam Verma

There is a steady increase in the unemployment rate in India. The jobless rate has increased to 7.80% in the month of March, which is the highest in three months. Last month in February the unemployment rate was 7.45%. The Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has released these unemployment rate figures on Saturday (April 1).

According to CMIE data, the urban unemployment rate has risen to 8.51% in March from 7.93% in the previous month. Whereas, the rural unemployment rate has increased from 7.23% to 7.47%. Mumbai-based CMIE data is closely watched by economists and policymakers, as the government does not release its monthly figures.

Haryana had the highest unemployment in the month of March

According to CMIE data, the unemployment rate in Chhattisgarh stood at 0.8% in the month of March. This is the lowest unemployment rate nationwide. The highest unemployment rate in this month was 26.8% in Haryana.

How is the unemployment rate determined?

The unemployment rate in March at 7.8% means that out of every 1000 workers who were willing to work, 78 could not find work. CMIE conducts door-to-door survey of people above 15 years of age every month and takes information about their employment status. After this, a report is prepared from the results obtained.
