Gadkari’s Question: Why do the Rich have 8 Airbags and the Poor have One?

Aastha Bhatia

According to the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, even small cars should have airbags for all passengers, so that the lower, middle, and poor sections can also get the necessary safety during travel.

In an interview, Gadkari asked the automobile companies that companies provide only 8 airbags in big cars bought by rich people, while small cars have only 2 to 3. Why so? He said that the poor should also get security in our country. We should also treat them equally as they are also humans. Everybody should get equal accessories in their cars. Discrimination should not be done with anybody.

At least 6 airbags required

He said that small cars are mostly bought by lower and middle-class people. If their cars do not have airbags, they can die in the event of an accident. In such a situation, I would appeal to all the car manufacturers to provide at least 6 airbags in all their cars.

Nitin Gadkari admitted that increasing the number of airbags would increase the cost of small cars by at least Rs 3,000 to 4,000. But the poor should also get full protection.

Two airbags have been made mandatory in all new cars from 1 April 2021. The Ministry has taken this step after the suggestion of the Committee on Road Safety of the Supreme Court.
