The central government has tightened the rules regarding registration and use of SIM cards on online video streaming apps, over-the-top (OTT platforms), and apps like Telegram and Signal. Those who register and buy SIM cards on OTT using fake identities are going to face this fraud.

The draft of the new telecommunications bill proposes that if a person provides fake documents for SIM or falsely identifies himself on WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram, he will be punished with imprisonment of either description for a year or a fine of Rs 50,000. These proposals are being brought so that financial fraud and illegal activities can be stopped through online fake identities.

That's why this step had to be taken

Cases of financial fraud through fake identities on the part of cybercriminals have been coming to the fore for a long time, which have increased in recent times. These cyber criminals obtain SIM cards on the basis of forged documents and dupe people by making calls through over the top (OTT) apps.

The Telecom Department has written in its note that with the introduction of this law, cyber frauds through telecom services will be stopped. Therefore, the provision of identification of people has been included in the draft. Users are required to reveal their identities.

How much punishment: The customer can be jailed for one year for giving a false identity. 50 thousand rupees fine or telecom service can be suspended, or these three punishments can also be given jointly. It has been made a cognizable offense. That is, the police can arrest without a warrant and start an investigation without the permission of the court.
