On this day in 1999 in Chennai, the Master Blaster played an innings to remember. His knock of 136 runs in a red-ball match might have not won India the game.

But this knock from the Master is still praised by many Indian fans and the Pakistani supporters as well.

Tendulkar's 136-run knock won many hearts, and he also earned a man of the Match award even when his team lost the match. This knock from Tendulkar was full of determination and concentration despite his being in pain due to the back spasm.

Pakistan was restricted by India to just 238 runs in their 1st innings despite the half-centuries from Mohammad Yusuf and Moin Khan. India’s Anil Kumble picked up 6 wickets, Javagal Srinath also claimed three wickets and Sachin Tendulkar also got a wicket to his name which helped the hosts, India in the first innings of this Test match.

India got to 254 runs in their 1st innings and Sachin Tendulkar bagged a golden duck. The home side got to that score because of the half-centuries from Rahul Dravid, who scored 53 runs and Mohammad Azharuddin was the top scorer for the Men in Blue in their 1st innings with 54 runs. The opener Sadagoppan Ramesh also contributed with useful 43 runs as well.

Pakistan batted much better in their 2nd innings. The visitors piled up 286 runs as Shahid Afridi scored a ton and Inzamam-ul-Haq also scored 51 runs. India’s Venkatesh Prasad got six wickets and Sachin was again in the game with the ball as he also picked up two important scalps for his side.

India had a target of 271 runs to win the first Test match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. But the home side had a horrifying start.

India was reeling at a score of 82 runs with the loss of five wickets. At that time, Sachin Tendulkar stepped up and played a gem of an innings for his national side.

Tendulkar also got the support of Nayan Mongia. The duo added 131 runs when their country needed it the most. However, this much-needed partnership was broken by the Pakistani great Wasim Akram when Nayan Mongia was dismissed for 52 runs.

Mongia was the only half-centurion apart from Sachin in that innings. The rest of the Indian batters were out cheaply and pretty early.

After Mongia was out, Saqlain Mushtaq also got the big wicket of Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar for a marvelous innings of 136 runs, that wicket allowed India to lose the match by just 12 runs.
