ODI Asia Cup was started in 1984

The first match of the Asia Cup was played in 1984 at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates and now this tournament between the Asian teams is played every two years.

Only the threat of coronavirus had stopped this tournament. In 2018, the last edition of the Asia Cup was played and it was played in the One Day International format.

Due to the coronavirus, the Asian Tournament was halted. But in 2022, the Asia Cup resumed in the T20I format in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

India and Pakistan boycotted this tournament once in 1986 and 1990/91 because of their political relations.

From 2008, the tournament is played after every two years and since 2016, this event is been played in the shortest format as well.

Now it is an integral part of every cricket schedule of the Asian teams. This event is played in two different formats now.

India is defending champions of the Asia Cup in the ODI Format

The men in blue won the Asia Cup 2018, which was played in the fifty overs format in the United Arab Emirates.

Overall, India has won seven Asia Cup Titles, which is the most in this Asian Tournament.

The Blues won the Asia Cup titles in 1984, 1988, 1991, 1995, 2010, 2016, and 2018.

But last year, their performance in the Asia Cup T20 wasn’t that great. In this edition, Rohit ad Co would like to give an improved performance.

Sri Lanka won their sixth Asia Cup title last year

Last year, the Asia Cup was played in the shortest format and surprisingly, The Lankan Tigers won that event despite losing the first game against Afghanistan by a heavy margin.

Sri Lanka also has the second most title wins in Asia Cup history. Dasun Shanaka and his boys won their sixth Asia Cup last year in the UAE (United Arab Emirates).

Overall Lankans won the titles in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2022.

Pakistan is placed third in the list of Asia Cup winners. They won just two trophies of the Asia Cup tournament in 2000 and 2012.

While Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore and Oman have been competitive in this event. But unfortunately, they have no trophies as of now.

Asia Cup 2023 will be played in the fifty-overs format

Every team wants to win the ODI World Cup 2023 and they are preparing for that ICC mega event. The Asia Cup 2023 will be an ideal platform for the six Asian teams to prepare for that mega ICC event in India.

So the Asian Cricket Council has planned that the 16th edition of the Asia Cup will be played in the One Day International format.
