
Covid-19 Update: In the past 24 hours, India has recorded 10,158 new COVID-19 cases with a daily positivity rate of 4.42%, marking the highest figures seen in almost eight months.
As per the health ministry website, the country's COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 98.71 per cent, while the case fatality rate has been reported as 1.19 per cent.
Despite this surge, experts have stated that it does not indicate a fresh wave, but rather an endemic cycle. The updated data from Thursday shows that the number of active cases has risen to 44,998.
According to experts, there is a possibility of a continued rise in COVID-19 cases for the next 10-12 days, but thereafter, a decline is expected. .
They have said that despite the surge, hospitalisations remain low and are likely to continue at low levels.
Furthermore, the current spike in cases is being attributed to XBB.1.16, a sub-variant of the Omicron variant, as per the experts.
Sources have reported that the prevalence of XBB.1.16 has risen from 21.6 per cent in February 2022 to 35.8 per cent in March 2022.
However, there have been no indications of an increase in hospitalisations or mortality rates associated with this sub-variant.
