Mexico: Young Girls are Treated like Animals and being Sold as Brides

Nidhi Hakla

Guerrero state in Mexico has a population of 3.4 million, where parents sell their daughters as a bride at an early age just for one and a half lakh rupees. The tradition has been in Guerrero, southern Mexico, for many years. However, many people are now opposing it.

Regarding this tradition, 23-year-old Aloina Feliciano says that I was sold just 14 years old. I requested my mother that I should not be sold. But my request went in vain. "Eloina says about her plea – Sold like animals. We are humans, not animals. "Some activists point out that such agreements are still reached in dozens of communities in Guerrero today. Parents of young girls ask for 13 lakh rupees and get them married.

Abel Barrera, director of the Center of Human Rights of the Mountain, says – "The girls here are completely insecure." Girls' new family enslaves him with domestic and agricultural tasks. Sometimes in-laws also sexually abuse them. Girls have become an object here. 61-year-old Maurilia Julio was also sold at an early age. She says- "People persecute the girl for buying them. Many women say that I am selling my daughter for $ 5,500–6,000 because I want the money, but I am saddened to hear it because they are their own children. '

I have a daughter, I can do whatever I want with her… and sell

In Guerrero last year, girls between 9 and 17 years gave birth to more than 3 thousand girls. Some of them have been sold for marriage. Victor Moreno, 29, says- "We want this tradition to change." But some fathers say that I will do what I want because I have a daughter. Nobody will tell me what to do. '
