In the INX Media case, former finance minister P Chidambaram has received a major setback. The court has extended Chidambaram's judicial custody till 3 October. Now he will have to stay in Tihar Jail for 14 more days. His bail plea will be heard in the High Court on 23 September. Chidambaram is in Tihar Jail since 5 September. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, opposed the CBI's request to extend the period of judicial custody. Sibal requested the court to provide his client with periodic medical check-ups and adequate dietary supplements while staying in Tihar Jail during judicial custody.

Sibal said that 73-year-old Chidambaram has a number of illnesses and his weight has also been reduced while in custody. Kapil Sibal said that Chidambaram has stomach pain, back pain. There is not even a chair to sit in Tihar. Only beds have not been given to the pillow. He said that there was a chair till three days ago.

P Chidambaram is accused that foreign investment was approved while he was the Finance Minister. The CBI also arrested his son Karti in this case and is currently out on bail. Karti is accused of taking money to get INX Media approval of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in 2007. His father was then the Finance Minister in the UPA government. The CBI had filed an FIR in the case on 15 May last year.
