Khalistan supporter and leader of the 'Waris Punjab De' organization, Amritpal Singh, who is currently imprisoned in Assam's Dibrugarh jail, is set to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Punjab.
Previously, Amritpal's lawyer had indicated that he might enter the electoral fray. It is now confirmed that Amritpal, detained under the National Security Act (NSA), will contest as an independent candidate from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib seat.
Amritpal Singh, detained under the National Security Act (NSA), will contest as an independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib. Prior to this, Amritpal’s lawyer, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, met him in jail where they discussed the possibility of contesting the elections.
Amritpal also released an audio message for the media in which he stated that he is ready to contest from the Khadoor Sahib seat and that he will not contest under any party’s symbol.
The lawyer mentioned that Amritpal could file his nomination between May 7 and May 17.
Last year, on February 23, Amritpal and members of his organization 'Waris Punjab De' attacked the Ajnala police station. Amritpal and his supporters were armed with swords and sticks. The chaos lasted for about eight hours and was triggered by the demand for the release of his supporter, Lovepreet Toofan.
Lovepreet Toofan had been detained by the police on charges of kidnapping and assaulting a man named Barinder Singh.
However, following the uproar, the police released him. In connection with this incident, the police filed a case. Subsequently, several associates of Amritpal were arrested, though he remained on the run for several days.
Later, the Punjab Police also imposed the National Security Act (NSA) on Amritpal. About two months after the incident, Amritpal was arrested and has since been detained in Assam's Dibrugarh jail. Several cases have been registered against Amritpal.
