Why Imran Khan Hesitates to Comment on Uighur Muslims ?

Ayushi Sharma

Desperate for the outpouring of the Muslim world, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has put a long silence on the atrocities of Uighur Muslims in neighboring China. It has been more than 17 months since he became PM, but till now he has been saying that he has no idea of what is happening to Muslims in Xinjiang province of China.

However, this time PM Imran was badly hit during an interview outside the World Economic Conference held in the city of Davos, Switzerland. While he was singing the rants of Muslims of Kashmir and India, the anchor asked him questions on Uighur Muslims. When Imran wanted to cut down on this question, the anchor said directly that you do not want to know about Uighur Muslims because you have economic relations with China. A Pakistani journalist has tweeted this part of the conversation.

Anchor– What's happening in your other neighboring China's western province of Xinjiang? There has been continuous evidence of atrocities on Muslims for months. Why don't you speak on this?

Imran– The first thing is that Kashmir is a disputed area between Pakistan and India. It has a direct contact from us because it is my neighbor.

Anchor – But I am not talking only about Kashmir, but on the broader issue. You also talk about Muslims from all over the India. You talk about the ideology of the ruling party of India. Do you care a little about what is happening to Chinese Muslims in Xinjiang?

Imran– I don't know enough about it. If I get to know well, I will talk to China in private.

At this, the anchor told Imran that China's policy documents makes the world know what was happening in Xinjiang. On this, Imran again revealed his ignorance. So the anchor said to Imran, "You are determined not to know about this because the economic relationship with China means a lot to you."
