Rio Olympics silver medalist badminton player PV Sindhu entered the semi-finals by defeating Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarterfinals of the women's badminton singles on Friday. Even if she loses in the semi-finals, she will have to play for the bronze medal.
PV Sindhu is the only Indian female badminton player to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. She was born on 5 July 1995 in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh. His parents were national level volleyball players. Father PV Ramana was part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. Even though Sindhu's parents were volleyball players, she herself was impressed by Pullela Gopichand's performance and started practicing at Gopichand's academy at the age of 9.
Meanwhile, Lovlina Borgohain defeated Nien-Chin Chen in her quarterfinal bout of Women's Welterweight (64-69kg) category. The win also helped Lovlina assure India of atleast a bronze medal. On the other hand, Deepika Kumari knocked out of the quarterfinals in the Women's Archery event, losing to South Korea's An San. Earlier in the day, the Indian archer had defeated ROC's Ksneia Perova to seal a berth in the quarterfinals.
In Boxing events, Satish Kumar has reached the quarterfinals in the men's 91+ kg weight category. He defeated Ricardo Brown of Jamaica 4-1 in the pre-quarterfinal match. He is now one win away from securing a medal. Meanwhile, the men's hockey team will be high on confidence when they take on Japan after having beaten defending Olympic champions Argentina yesterday.
