Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju Announces Lifetime Monthly Pension Scheme for Athletes

On Monday, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju announced a lifetime monthly pension for athletes under the 'Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons' scheme. He gave this information through his official Twitter handle. Rijiju wrote in the caption of his tweet, 'This is for the information of all the concerned sportspersons: Lifelong monthly pension for medal winners in international events under 'Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons' scheme.'

The Sports Minister said in his statement, 'Sportspersons who are Indian nationals and have won medals in Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and World Cup / World Championships (in Olympic and Asian Games) and Paralympic Games, get lifetime monthly pension. The eligible age limit for this is 30 years or retired from active sports, whatever.' He further said that at present, 627 sportspersons are getting lifetime monthly pension from Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000 under this scheme.
