Nidhi Hakla

A tunnel-like structure was found in the Delhi Assembly on Thursday. Speaking to news agency ANI, Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goyal said that the tunnel connects the assembly with the Red Fort and was used by the Britishers for shifting freedom fighters to avoid protests.

Ram Niwas Goyal said that when I became MLA in 1993, there was a rumour about the tunnel present here that connect to Fort and I tried to find out its history. But there was no clarification on this. He further said that we have now got the mouth of the tunnel. But we are not digging it further as all the tunnel paths have been destroyed due to metro projects and sewer installation.

Changed to court in 1926

Goyal said that the Delhi Legislative Assembly was used as the Central Legislative Assembly in 1912 after the capital was shifted from Kolkata to Delhi. After this, it was converted into a court in 1926 and the Britishers use this tunnel to bring freedom fighters to court. We all know about the rooms where fighters were being hanged here but they were never opened. Now in the 75th year of independence, I decided to inspect that room. We want to convert that room into a temple of freedom fighters as a tribute.

The assembly is related to the history of independence

The Speaker of the Assembly said that the history of the Delhi Legislative Assembly is related to independence. That's why he wants to open the hanging room for tourists till the next Independence Day. Work for this has also been started. He further said that the history of this place is very rich in the context of the freedom struggle. We want to renovate it so that tourists can know something about our history.
