Srinagar: An encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in the Chandaji area of Bandipora district of Kashmir on Tuesday. An unidentified terrorist was killed in the ongoing encounter in the Chandaji area of Bandipora. Two to three terrorists are likely to be hiding. The search operation is going on.
A joint team of police and army cordoned off the area and the encounter took place after launching a search operation based on specific information about the presence of terrorists. As soon as the security forces reached the spot, the terrorists hiding there started firing. The operation turned into an encounter as the terrorists opened fire on the security forces. The security forces also gave a befitting reply to the firing.
A total of 89 terrorists, including seven Pakistani nationals, have been killed by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir till July 31 this year. While there are still more than 200 terrorists active in the union territory. Vijay Kumar, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, said, "Out of these 89 terrorists, seven were foreign terrorists (or Pakistanis). This (number) is less than last year, but this year a higher number of their top commanders have been killed."
When asked about the number of terrorists present in Jammu and Kashmir, Lt Gen Pandey said that around 200 to 225 terrorists would be present in the Union Territory. However, he said that so far this year, no cross-border infiltration attempt has been successful.
