Jitender Kumar and Deepak Punia Qualified for Asian Wrestling Championship

Indian Wrestler Jitender Kumar won the trails in 74 kg weight category on Friday. Now, Beijing and London Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar's bid for Tokyo Olympics is only depend on luck. Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh made it clear that if Jitender, Satyavart Kadian (97 kg) and Sumit (125 kg) fails to win medals in the ranking tournament in Rome and the Asian Championship in Delhi then, the Trials will be conducted in these weight categories again. Now, Sushil will have to rely on Jitender's poor performance in Asian Championship to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Brij Bhushan clarified after the trial that the wrestling association would not take any risk for the Olympics. Olympic quota has been achieved in 57, 65 and 86 kg, and to take quota in the remaining three weight Categories, the performance of the three wrestlers won in trials will be monitored. The winning wrestlers will play in the Rome and Asian Championships.

In the absence of Sushil, there was a tremendous competition in 74 kg. National champion Gaurav Balyan was defeated 6-7 by veteran Amit Dhankad in the semi-finals. At the same time, Jitender reached the finals after defeating Vinod Kumar and then defeated Amit by 5-2 in the finals. During this time Ravi Kumar and Deepak Punia, who achieved Olympic quota in 57 and 86 kg, won the trial in their weight classes. Ravi defeated Pankaj and Deepak defeated Pawan Kumar. While Satyavart, who returned from preparations from America, easily defeated Mausam Khatri in 97 kg. In 125 kg, Sumit defeated Dharmendra in the final. Trials will be held in Lucknow for the selection of the women's team on Saturday.
