Jair Bolsonaro to Meet President Kovind and PM Modi

The Chief Guest of Republic Day Parade 2020, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is scheduled to meet President Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar today. India and Brazil will sign 15 agreements to promote cooperation in areas such as oil and gas, mining and cyber security following talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Officials said that on Saturday, PM Modi and Bolsanaro will hold extensive talks aimed at reinvigorating the already close and strategic ties between the two countries. Bolsonaro arrived in India on Friday with his daughter Laura Bolsonaro, daughter-in-law Leticia Fermo, eight ministers, four members of the Brazilian parliament and a large business delegation.

Hours after reaching India, Bolsonaro visited the Akshardham temple with officials. India's relations with Brazil, the largest country in Latin America, have been in turmoil over the years. The country has a population of 210 million and an economy of US $ 1.8 million.

The two sides will sign 15 agreements, including an investment cooperation and facilitation treaty, social security, mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and an MoU on cooperation in bioenergy. Separate agreements will also be signed for cooperation in the areas of cyber security, health and medicine, oil and natural gas, geology and mining and scientific research.

Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Vijay Thakur Singh said in a press conference on Thursday that the visit of President Bolsonaro is a very important one. This will be an opportunity to reactivate our strategic partnership and take it forward in a focused way. Let me tell you that a former army captain Bolsonaro won the presidential election of Brazil in October 2018 and took the reins of the country in January last year.
