The basic goal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 was to provide Indian citizenship to six minority communities who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Even if they did not have valid documents, this facility was to be given. Government has given this information in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

In a written reply to the question of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai said, "Three years ago this bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in the name of the Nationalism Amendment Bill 2016. After this he was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee. The committee submitted its report to the Parliament on January 7 this year. In the Rajya Sabha this idea was pending and passed. After this, the bill ended due to dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha. '

The Minister of State for Home also said that the basic aim of the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 was to provide Indian citizenship to the people of six minority communities coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh without valid travel documents.

Even those whose documents expired were also given this facility. He said that the Citizenship Act 1955 considers such people as illegal immigrants and prevents them from applying for Indian citizenship.

The Tribunal formed in Assam has declared 1.17 lakh people as foreigners till March this year. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Krishna Reddy gave this information in response to the written question of Congress MP Abdul Khalek in the Lok Sabha. He said that currently 100 foreign tribunals are working in different districts of Assam.
