On This Day in 2008: Virat Kohli Made his International Debut for Team India

Exactly 13 years ago on this day, Indian skipper Virat Kohli made his international debut for Team India. However, Kohli's first day at the crease did not last long as he scored just 12 runs in his first international match. He made his ODI debut as an opening batsman for India and scored 12 runs off 22 balls. In the first match, he was dismissed by Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Kulasekara in the eighth over.

The Sri Lankan team bundled out the MS Dhoni-led Indian team for 146 as both Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan took three wickets each. At the same time, Sri Lanka, chasing the target, defeated India by eight wickets with 91 balls remaining. In this way, the first international match was not memorable for Virat Kohli. At the same time, Kohli had to wait for 14 matches for his maiden century and finally he scored his first century against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2009. He played an unbeaten knock of 133 runs off just 86 balls, hitting 16 fours and a couple of sixes as India chased the target in just 36.4 overs.

Kohli's International Career:

Talking about Kohli's international career, he has scored 43 centuries in One Day International matches. He is one of the best run-chasers in the history of cricket. The India captain has played 254 ODIs so far in which he has scored 12,169 runs at an average of 59.07, with his highest score being 183 against Pakistan. The right-handed batsman is second after Sachin Tendulkar in the list of most centuries in ODI cricket. Under Kohli's captaincy, The Indian team qualified for WTC 2020 final against New Zealand. However, the Indian team lost the final but they proved themselves as best run-chaser in Test cricket.
