India's dream of playing in the FIFA World Cup 2022 was also shattered with the defeat in the World Cup qualifier match against Oman on Tuesday.  India lost to Oman by 0–1 in Group E. The only goal of the match was done by Mohsin Al Ghasani in the 33rd minute.

This is Oman's second victory over India. Before this, Oman defeated India by 2–1 in September. Although Gurpreet tried to goal in the 64th minute but he could not goal. India is currently in fourth place with 3 points. Asia Champion Qatar is at first place with 13 points. Oman has 12 points and is in second place. There is a difference of nine points between India and Oman in the points table. In such a situation, the chances of its entry for the third phase are almost gone. India has three matches remaining and in that case it can score only nine more. While the runners-up team is also not guaranteed to reach the third stage.

However, India's chances of entering the 2023 Asian Cup qualifiers remain intact. The competition is also a joint qualifier for the Asian Cup. For this continental championship, the top four teams in the fourth place along with the third-placed teams in the eight groups will enter the third phase of the Asian Cup qualifiers.
