India's legendary spin bowler Rajinder Goyal died on Sunday. In first-class cricket, Rajinder has the highest number of wickets in his name. Rajinder, the finest spinner of his time, died due to age-related ailments. He was 77 years old.
Rajinder Goyal was living with his wife and son Nitin Goyal. Nitin is also associated with cricket and has been a first-class cricketer. He is currently the match referee of the BCCI domestic matches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has mourned the demise of this great bowler and posted a condolence message on its Twitter handle with a picture of Rajinder Goyal.
Former Chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Ranbir Singh Mahendra has expressed condolences. This left-arm spinner used to play in the era when Bishan Singh Bedi was an important part of the Indian team. Because of this, he never got a place in the Indian team.
He took 39 wickets in the 1984–85 Ranji season. This was his last season and he was the highest wicket-taker in this. Goyal took 750 wickets in 157 matches in first-class cricket for Haryana and North Zone. He played first-class cricket for 44 years.
Goyal was also included in Sunil Gavaskar's book Idols. In an interview, he said that he was born at the wrong time. At the time, Rajinder never managed to make a place in the Indian team with veterans like Bishan Singh Bedi, Irapalli Prasanna. He called it a game of luck.
