The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had earlier written to Facebook asking the social media platform to take action against Rahul. On August 13, the NCPCR had issued a summons to Facebook, asking its representatives to appear in person. Because the representatives did not respond to the notice. However, after taking action, Facebook mailed Rahul and asked him to remove the photo. When Facebook sent a copy of the mail to NCPCR to Rahul Gandhi, the child rights panel exempted it from summons.

On August 4, the NCPCR had asked Twitter to take action against Rahul Gandhi's account in the same matter. After this, Twitter had locked the account of the Congress leader, although his account was restored on Saturday. The NCPCR had said that disclosing the identity of the girl's parents violated Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act, Section 23 of the POCSO Act, and Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code.
