Emergency Imposed in New York for the First Time in History after Heavy Rain

Rain cyclone Ida has wreaked havoc in America. After hitting the US city of Louisiana four days ago, it has reached North American states including New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania. About 6 crore people in the country are battling the floods, while 3 lakh houses are without electricity.

8 inches of rain in New York on Wednesday night

New York has been affected the most. Meteorologists say that this rain in New York could be the heaviest rain in the last 400 years. On Wednesday, 3.5 inches of rain was recorded in an hour and about 8 inches of rain overnight. For the first time in the history of New York, a state of emergency has been imposed. Most of the subways in New York City have been flooded. Metro is closed. MTS bus route has come to a complete standstill. Cars are drowned on the roads. Hundreds of flights have been canceled.

14 killed in floods in New Jersey

On the other hand, there have been 14 deaths in New Jersey due to flooding. A two-year-old child is also among the dead. 9 people are injured and many are missing. The airport was flooded after 3.24 inches of rain fell in an hour. All flights originating from Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey were suspended. However, some essential flights were started later.

Subway line and transit service closed

New York's subway line and 18 transit rail services to New Jersey have been suspended. Apart from emergency vehicles, no vehicles are being allowed to ply on the roads. The Met Office has issued heavy rain warnings for Philadelphia and northern New Jersey.
