Muskan Mathur

The home of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi was attacked by a drone early on Sunday. He narrowly escaped in this attack. The Iraqi military said that this morning a drone loaded with explosives targeted the PM residence in Baghdad. It was an attempt to assassinate PM Kadhimi. In this attack, 6 people posted in the security of the Prime Minister were injured. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack on the prime minister's residence in Baghdad's Green Zone. It is known that there are many government buildings and foreign embassies in this zone. Kadhimi's official Twitter account said that the Prime Minister is safe. People need not panic.

'Blasts and gunshots heard'

According to a Reuters report, two government officials said there was at least one attack on Kadimi's home. 6 members deployed in security outside PM Residence have been injured. Western diplomats in the Green Zone said they heard explosions and gunshots.

Allegations of rigging in parliamentary elections

The attack on Iraq's PM residence comes at a time when there have been allegations of rigging in the parliamentary elections held in the country last month. On Friday itself, a clash broke out between supporters of pro-Iranian Shia fighters camping outside Baghdad's Green Zone area and anti-riot police, which later turned violent.

One protester killed in violence

One demonstrator was killed and several people were injured, mostly members of Iraqi security forces, in the incident. The protesters rejected the defeat in the parliamentary elections. The pro-Iran fighters had to face the biggest defeat in the election.
