Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), expressed his opinion that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should not be the one to inaugurate the new Parliament building.

According to Asaduddin Owaisi, the new Parliament building should be inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Owaisi's statement coincides with the collective decision of nineteen opposition parties, including the Congress, the Trinamool Congress, AAP, and CPI-M, to boycott the inauguration of the new parliament building on May 28.

According to the opposition parties, the inauguration of the new parliament building should be conducted by President Droupadi Murmu, who is the head of the state, rather than Prime Minister Modi.

The opposition parties criticised Prime Minister Modi's decision to solely inaugurate the new Parliament building, excluding President Droupadi Murmu. 

Owaisi expressed disagreement with the proposal for President Murmu to inaugurate new Parliament building.

In contrast, Asaduddin Owaisi, the head of AIMIM, expressed his disagreement with the proposal for President Murmu to inaugurate the new Parliament building.

"There is no denying the need for a new Parliament building," Owaisi added. We are only opposing its inauguration being conducted by PM Modi."

In addition, Owaisi remarked, "The opposition parties have not reached out to me. However, their suggestion that the President should inaugurate the new Parliament building is constitutionally incorrect. 

PM Modi initiated the construction in Dec 2020

Owaisi stated on Wednesday, "If the new Parliament building is inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, then AIMIM will be present at the ceremony."

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the newly-constructed Parliament building on Sunday, May 28th.

The newly-constructed Parliament building can comfortably accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha chamber and 300 members in the Rajya Sabha chamber. 

When both Houses have a joint sitting, the Lok Sabha chamber can accommodate a maximum of 1,280 members.

On December 10, 2020, Prime Minister Modi initiated the construction of the new parliament building by laying its foundation stone.
