Manipur Violence: Following recent inter-ethnic skirmishes in the northeastern state of Manipur, about 5,800 individuals have fled to Mizoram. 

71 individuals have been killed as a result of the violent clashes between the Meiteis and tribals.

Officials report that a total of 5,822 individuals belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo group are currently being accommodated in temporary relief camps distributed among six districts in Mizoram. 

The latest data reveals that Aizawl district has the largest population of displaced individuals in 2021, followed by Kolasib (1,847) and Saitual (1,790).

Concurrently, Mizoram Lok Sabha member C Lalrosanga has expressed support for the demand for separate administration for tribals by Manipur tribal MLAs.

In the aftermath of the violent skirmishes, 10 Kuki MLAs, including seven from the BJP, petitioned the centre to establish a separate administration, claiming that tribal people could no longer exist under the Manipur government.

The skirmishes erupted in Manipur following a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts on May 3 to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Tensions about the displacement of Kuki people from the reserve forest area sparked a succession of minor rallies before the violence.

Meiteis account for 53% of Manipur's population and dwell primarily in the Imphal Valley. Tribals - Nagas and Kukis - make up another 40% of the population and reside in highland areas. 

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, along with four cabinet members and BJP state president Sharda Devi, paid a visit to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital on Sunday (May 14). 

Previously, Singh stated that a high-level investigation will be done to punish those responsible for the violence accountable as well as those who failed to carry out their obligations in curbing the unrest. 

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh appealed to the public to refrain from spreading or accepting unverified rumors.
