Monali Gupta

According to research conducted on about 47,000 women, women who always use hair dye and hair straightener are more at risk of developing breast cancer than other women.

The research was conducted by the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to find out how the environment and genes can affect breast Cancer development risk.

Researchers, including the NIEHS team, said that women who use at least one hair straightener every five to eight weeks are about 30 percent more likely to get breast cancer.

They stated that the relationship between the use of straightener and breast cancer was similar in African women and American women, but the use of hair straightener is much more common among African American women.

NIEHS co-author Alexandra White said that our research has found that using more hair dye also increases the risk of breast cancer.

Research findings published in the International Journal of Cancer also stated that among women who used hair dye regularly in the year before participating in the research, they were 9 percent more likely to have breast cancer. There were more who did not use hair dye.

However, researchers are still doing further research on it to confirm that both hair straightener and hair dye are responsible for breast cancer.
