The Death Toll from Poisonous Liquor in Assam, 133 Deaths, 200 Serious

The number of those who died due to drinking poisonous liquor in Assam increased to 133 on Sunday, while more than 200 people were admitted to the hospital in Golaghat and Jorhat districts. While confirming the number of dead, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwal said that 10 people have been arrested in connection with the sale and production of illegal liquor known as 'Sleigh Mod' in Assamia.

They said, "We have sent samples of alcohol to the Forensic Science Laboratory and are waiting for the report." Meanwhile, an Excise Department official said that 90 cases of illegal liquor sales and production have been registered. They said, "We have seized and destroyed 4,860 liters of illicit liquor from February 22."

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on Saturday and found the condition of the victims. He announced the donation of Rs. Two lakh rupees to the families of the victims and the gift of Rs. 50,000 to the people getting treatment. A large number of people consumed poisonous liquor on Thursday night in the remote villages of the Salmon Tea Garden in Golaghat and TitoraBore sub-division of Jorhat district, 300 km away.
