The Government of Gujarat has made changes in the Motor Vehicle Act. Just a few days after imposing heavy fines under the amended Motor Vehicle Act from 1 September, the Gujarat government reduced the penalty for violating traffic rules by nearly 50 per cent.

The new penalty was announced by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani himself. The new rules for traffic violations in the state will be implemented from September 16.

In Gujarat, there will now be a fine of 500 rupees instead of 1000 rupees on a helmet, a fine of 500 rupees instead of 1000 rupees without a seat belt in a car, a fine of 500 rupees will be imposed on driving without a license.

The Gujarat government contended that the high fines do not seem feasible and they will implement the new criteria only after getting a report from the RTO.

Meanwhile, the Rajasthan government says it is considering providing practical relief to violators of the amended Motor Vehicles Act from hefty penalty charges. Rajasthan Transport Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said, "Motorcycle is the common transport vehicle of the common people and it is not practical to impose hefty fine on it. In some cases, penalty is more than cost of the vehicle."
