Now no mother or child will die in the country due to lack of treatment during delivery. To achieve the goal of 100% safe motherhood, the government has launched a new scheme called Suman (Safe Maternity Assurance). The objective of the scheme is to ensure 100% delivery in the country under the supervision of a hospital or trained nurse. Currently this figure is 80 percent.

A senior Health Ministry official said that under the new scheme, every pregnant woman will be guaranteed safe motherhood. Under this, the pregnant woman will have the right to four times free examination before delivery, in which the health of the fetus along with the woman will also be known. Not only this, free ambulance will be provided to bring the woman to the hospital before delivery and later to go back home.

The government will bear all the expenses incurred during the delivery, even from the operation itself. She will also provide free medicines to mother and child for six months after delivery. In the event of a newborn child suffering from any serious disease, the government will bear the entire cost of its treatment.

To ensure the benefit of this scheme to all pregnant women, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a 'Service Guarantee Charter'. A senior official said that the government has decided to seek the help of self-help groups, village level health and sanitation committees along with NGOs to reach pregnant women to remote areas.

A vehicle can be called for free to reach a pregnant woman by calling the toll-free number 102 or 108. The senior official said that there would be a policy of zero tolerance against negligence in this case. The senior official said that it is not difficult to achieve the goal of 100% delivery in the hospital. So far 80 percent deliveries are being done in hospitals. 52 percent of which are happening in government hospitals. The Suman Abhiyan will try to ensure that no women are denied hospital facilities during childbirth due to lack of money.
