The world's largest iceberg has broken off the coast of Antarctica. The iceberg, named as 'A-76', measures around 4320 sq km in size—that is 170 km long and 25 km wide. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the iceberg calved from the western side of the Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica. ESA has detected this with Copernicus Sentinel Satellite. According to the ESA, now this broken iceberg is now floating on the Weddell Sea, which has become a cause of curiosity for scientists. The entire size of this huge iceberg is more than about 4 thousand sq km. It is about half the size of New York's island Porto Rico.
Earlier, a large iceberg was broken in 1986. On the other hand, some research suggests that since 1980 there has been an average of 9 inches difference in sea level. That is, the water level of the sea has increased by 9 inches. The biggest reason for this is global warming. This causes icebergs to melt and then break and fall into the sea.
Earlier, the iceberg, named A68a, had also broken off from the Larsen Ice Shelf, which has warmed faster than any other part of Earth's southernmost continent. The area of this iceberg was 160 kilometers long and 48 kilometers across. According to scientists, this iceberg was gradually moving towards South Georgia. A team of scientists was also sent there to investigate this. This team had studied the effects on the environment there due to the separation of the iceberg. At the time, it was separated from the Larsen Sea, its size was about 5,800 sq km.
