Truecaller’s Big scam, Forced Users to Register UPI

The news of data breach has become commonplace nowadays. In the meanwhile, information about the data breach of Smartphone's Popular App Truecaller is also available. Thousands of users are complaining about Twitter that their smartphones are being messaged by TrueCaller for UPI registrations without their permission.

There is a flood of users complaining about Twitter. A user on Twitter wrote: 'When I got up in the morning when I checked my Android phone, Truecaller app update was missing. Along with this, some more such apps were also updated. Immediately after the update, the app had encrypted an anonymous number from my phone, immediately after which I received an SMS from ICICI Bank. '

The user further stated that the message I received was written in it – 'Your registration for UPI has started.' The user further explains that I have no account with ICICI Bank. But Truecaller has partnered with ICICI Bank for its UPI based payment service. This means that TrueCaller is getting the UPI registration without the user's permission.

This incident on Twitter is being mentioned by many users. Also, users are tagging NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) for taking cognizance in the context of the incident. Also, users are also told to uninstall trueCaller.

TrueCaller has issued a statement. The company has said, "We have found a bug in the latest True Caller update, which is affecting the payment feature and registering it for itself. It was a bug and we have discontinued it, now no users will be impressed by it. We are sorry that this version could not match our quality standards.
