The Supreme Court has given relief to a teacher of St. Xavier's School in Jaipur in the case of abetment to suicide. The court said, 'If a student commits suicide by taking the offense of reprimand, then the teacher cannot be held guilty. The teacher's reprimand does not amount to abetment of suicide. Justice Nazir said, "There is a saying that if the stick is not used, the child will be spoiled. Although corporal punishment cannot be given to the child by law, this does not mean that the teacher should turn a blind eye to the indiscipline of the child. "

A class 9 student of St Xavier's School committed suicide by hanging himself on April 26, 2018. On May 2, 2018, the police had registered a case of abetment to suicide against PT teacher Jio Varghese on the complaint of the child's mother. The mother had alleged that a day before the incident, Varghese had reprimanded her son in front of everyone.
This made him feel very humiliated and came under mental stress. Police found a two-page suicide note. Based on this, the police were treating the teacher as an accused. On this Varghese reached the Rajasthan High Court to quash the case but the High Court did not give relief. Thereafter, Varghese filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
