Serum Institute Seeks DCGI’s Approval to Manufacture COVID-19 Vaccine Sputnik V in India

Serum Institute of India (SII) has sought permission from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for the production of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine 'Sputnik V' in the country. Meanwhile, Dr. Reddy's laboratory has already got approval from the Drug Controller General of India for emergency use of the 'Sputnik V' vaccine.

According to sources, "The Serum Institute of India (SII) put up an application to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Wednesday seeking permission to manufacture the COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, in India." SII has already informed the government that it will manufacture and supply 100 million doses of Covishield Vaccine in June. On the other hand, it is also manufacturing the Novavax vaccine, which is awaiting regulatory approval from the United States. The vaccine was granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by DCGI in April.

Consignment of 30 lakh doses of Sputnik V landed in Hyderabad:

Earlier on Tuesday, a consignment of 3 million doses of Russian vaccine 'Sputnik V' reached Hyderabad. Weighing 56.6 tonnes, this consignment of vaccine was the largest ever to be imported to India. Dr. Reddy has signed an agreement with Russia to sell 12.5 crore doses of Sputnik V in India.

Over 22 crores vaccine doses administered so far:

Meanwhile, mass vaccination against COVID-19 is underway in the country. India is currently administering three vaccines to its citizens, Covaxin (Bharat Biotech), Covishield (Serum Institute of India), and Sputnik V. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, so far 22,10,43,693 people vaccinated in the country. Out of this, 24,26,265 vaccines administered in the last 24 hours.
