Maharashtra Government Cuts Covid-19 Test Fee, Claims Lowest Fee in the Country

In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced a drastic reduction in the testing fees for coronavirus infection. The state government has now fixed the fees for Coronavirus infection testing. State Health Minister Rajesh Tope has claimed that the coronavirus test fee in the country is lowest in Maharashtra as compared to the entire country.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Saturday that the government has reduced the price of Covid-19 test done by private labs from Rs 4,500 to Rs 2,200. Tope told PTI-Language that people would get relief from the low prices of the testing.

He said, "Rs.2,200 will be collected from hospitals for collecting oral saliva samples through viral transport media (VTM) while Rs.2,800 will be collected for collecting mouth saliva samples from home." Earlier, Rs 4,500 and Rs 5,200 were charged for it respectively.

Tope said that private labs can charge a maximum of the same amount. The District Collector can talk to the private lab to reduce the prices further. "If private labs charge more than this, legal action will be taken against them," he said, adding that these new rates would be the lowest in the country. The minister said that there are 91 labs in the state for the Covid-19 test.
