A research conducted by King's College of London and the Australian National University showed that poverty levels in middle-income developing countries increased rapidly. The report, published by the United Nations University, studied through several scenarios. It defined people who earn $ 1.90 or less per day in extreme poverty and less than $ 5.50 in higher poverty, taking into account the various poverty lines of the World Bank.
According to the study, the number of people living in extreme poverty may increase to 1.12 billion. The number of people earning $ 5.50 in high-middle-income countries may exceed 3.7 billion. Andy Sumner, one of the authors of the report, said, "The outlook for the poorest people in the world is critical and it will remain so until governments do more and sooner for these people."
